Bathtub Beach Project Public Hearing

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

A beach listed as one of the top in the world remains closed, but now there's plan in place to rebuild.  Emergency managers in Martin County shut down Bathtub Beach on South Hutchinson Island after erosion ripped apart the shoreline last fall.  Engineers say because of the worm rock reef just feet from the coast, they cannot rebuild by traditional sand dumps it would smother the reef.

The plan going in front of the public this week includes building a large plant dune to attract sand to allow the beach to rebuild naturally.  The one-point-6 million dollar coastal project would not begin until December.. leaving the beach closed for the remainder of 2008.

Engineers want your input on the project at a public workshop starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday

at the Blake Library, on 2351 SE Monterey Road, in Stuart.
