Domestic calls up at local call center

WEST PALM BEACH, FL--Six hundred calls everyday come into the 2-1-1 resource call center in Palm Beach County with despite pleas for support and help.

"People are overwhelmed," said Patrice Schroeder who works for 211. "Especially if they don't have a good support system to be able to coop with what they're dealing with."

 Counselors at the call center say it often plays out into domestic abuse. Recently in Boca Raton a man allegedly shot and killed his girl friend. Then last night near Fort Pierce, a man is accused of shooting his girlfriend before taking his own life.

Less than just twelve hours ago in Greenacres authorities shot and killed a man after they say he stabbed a deputy during a stand-off that started as a domestic fight.

Back at the 211 call center where there's a wait to get your call answered It's turns out domestic calls seem to be non-stop.

"We can see that there is tie between the unemployment factor," says Schroeder.

Experts say the struggling economy playing a big role.

"They're frustrated, they're worried about not being able to provide for their families, especially a husband," said Erin McConnell who is the director in the call center at 211.

If you’re in a dangerous domestic situation experts say there is help out there.

They recommend seeking support, making a plan, and locating alternative housing or shelter.

Counselors at 211 are working to help people in the midst of crisis.

There are shelters for woman and children who have fallen victim to domestic abuse in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast. Just dial 211 for more information.
