Nuisance neighbors are facing tougher penalties in one local city.
Port St. Lucie City Council members approved a plan to give code violators fewer warnings and less time to comply with citations before facing a special magistrate, or even a county judge.
The city is doing away with its traditional code enforcement board, hoping a judge will force absentee owners to clean it up faster.
Right now, the city faces one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country and city managers say they needed to take action before the nuisances got even worse.
