Protecting your home from wildfires

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

A dry weather warning, fires like this can spark and spread in seconds.  Experts say, the dry season is just getting started.  To top that off, a local county holds the title of the driest in the entire state.  That unwanted title, going to Indian River County.  All you've worked for, photo albums, things that can't be replaced.  Wildfires take so much from local families, most recently in May.  Thousands of acres burned here in Indiantown, two homes consumed.

"It was embers from the main fire that flew right onto the home's roof and took down the houses," recalled Melissa Yunas with the Florida Division of Forestry.

Yunas tells us South Florida wildfires are unpredictable..

She said, "In 1999 the Treasure Coast, along Gatlin 43 homes were destroyed because of wildfires."

Early indications are that this season could get nasty.  We're in the danger zone already.

Yunas said, "And that's extremely high for the Treasure Coast."

Want to stay safe?  First we'll show you what firefigheters want you to do.  They call this one a low risk home, it's got plenty of space around it.

Yunas said, "A fire truck could easily get around it, and the roof is the most vulnerable part of the house."

With that said, check out the roof of our low risk house, free from debris.  But it's stuff like this, right next to the high risk house, making it so dangerous.  Check out this dry and cracking bark, the trees aren't native to our area, but they're ready to burn.  Fire officials want you to clean up now.
