Palm Beach County commissioners took their final vote Tuesday approving an ordinance requiring alarms on all daycare center vans transporting children.

New Palm Beach County ordinance mandates alarms in all daycare vans

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. -- Palm Beach County commissioners unanimously approve new requirements for daycare centers, including mandatory alarms on vans that transport children.

Today's vote comes one year after the death of 2-year-old Haile Brockington who was left all day in a hot van at Katie's Kids in Delray Beach.

The new ordinance requiring alarms is getting a boost from the Children's Services Council. That agency okayed up to $100,000 to reimburse daycare owners for installing the alarms on the vans.

"Those centers who serve infants and toddlers, and are providing quality child care, often are operating on a small margin. So this gives a boost, and extra incentive, and frankly-- no excuse," said Tana Ebbole, Children's Services Council.

The alarms cost between $250 and $400.
