Pilot in Jamaica Crash from Juno Beach
New information on the commercial airline crash in Jamaica.
Brian Cole, the pilot of the American Airlines jet that crashed, lives in Juno Beach. Neighbors say he suffered a broken arm.
"The fact that so many people were able to walk off and there were so really few injuries after seeing some of the photos of the plane, it was incredible," said Peter Higgins, a friend and neighbor of Brian Cole.
Cole was the pilot of American Airlines Flight 331 that crashed as it landed in Kingston in a storm Tuesday.
And Higgins says before the crash happened, he was planning to have Cole over to his house on Christmas.
"He just seems very cautious about everything, he's very particular about everything he does," Higgins said.
The American Airlines plane, with 154 people on board, skidded along the runway in Kingston after landing in a rain storm, injuring more than 40 people.
Higgins says Cole was no beginner, with two decades' flying experience.
"He was very particular about making sure everything was by the book and you know, before you do anything check out the plane 100% and don't skip over anything," Higgins said.
Another neighbor who lives across the street says Cole, a divorced father of three boys, is a wonderful guy who was into surfing and yoga.
"When I heard the news it was really, really heartbreaking so thank goodness he's alive, you know and he will be well again," said Rima Zotovas, a neighbor who has known Cole for several years.
She says Cole was a helpful neighbor who sometimes came over and spruced up her home, planting flowers in her yard without her even asking him.
"He's the nicest person that you could meet. He loves to do good for people," said Zotovas.
She says as far as she knows, this was Cole's first accident as a pilot.
An American Airlines spokeswoman in Miami says seven people were admitted to the hospital in Jamaica Tuesday, and only six remain hospitalized there as of Thursday night.
All are in stable condition. None of the injuries are life-threatening.
She would not say if the pilot from Juno Beach, Brian Cole, is still in the hospital.
She said Cole and the American Airlines co-pilot on the plane that crashed have a combined 30 years' flying experience.
