CHANGE, CHANGE, CHANGE
10/10/12
Change is hard on a lot of people. That became crystal clear to me when I made the move to the CBS 12 morning show recently. The e-mails, Facebook messages and tweets have been non-stop.
"I miss you at 7pm," one viewer writes. "I tried to watch you in the morning, but it's too early for me."
"I think you made a big mistake moving Suzanne Boyd and Eric Roby to that time slot. Suzanne is way too hyper for that time of morning," writes another.
And a Facebook friend posted, "Can we as viewers get a complete explanation for the switch? I'm a creature of habit."
People get into a routine. They like the habit of watching the same people at the same time day in and day out.
I, however, like change. I embrace it! Maybe it's because I'm "too hyper", but I love it when something new is happening in my life. It usually means I am growing, learning, becoming a better me.
So when the management here at CBS 12 approached me about moving to the morning show, I was excited and ready for the challenge. Yes, I would be waking up at the ungodly hour of 2am. But it also meant I would be able to see my kids more often, pick them up from school, have dinner with them.
Every change in my life, good and bad, has taught me a valuable lesson. Having children taught me patience, going through a medical scare taught me to take care of myself, trying to fix an addicted family member taught me that I can't fix anyone but myself.
Tony Robbins says, "By changing nothing, nothing changes."
Change is hard. It can be uncomfortable. It can be scary. But change can change your life - even if that change involves getting up in the middle of the night in order to be "too hyper" on television.
DOCTOR'S ORDERS
09/27/12
I broke my hand. There is a really, really good story behind the break, but it's not for public consumption. And that's not the point of this story, anyway.
The point is you don't *always* have to follow doctor's orders. If there are any doctors reading this, I apologize, but hear me out.
My hand specialist, Dr. Jeffrey Rosenfield, gave me two options for fixing my broken metacarpal: wear a cast for 6 weeks (not guaranteed my hand would ever be the same) or surgery with a removable splint for 4 weeks (faster recovery, better results). The removable part is key to this story. I opted for the surgery and splint.
It was outpatient surgery so I went home that day. I was a little loopy and in pain for 24 hours, but it wasn't bad. Four days later, I'm at Dr. Rosenfield's office being fitted for my removable ulnar gutter splint. It was cumbersome, uncomfortable and quite frankly I couldn't do ANYTHING with it on. So within 48 hours, I removed it. Remember, it's removable.
I still wore the splint sometimes, but not very often and certainly not as often as Dr. Rosenfield thought I was wearing it. So 2 weeks later, I returned to his office for x-rays to see how my hand was healing. And, guess what? Not only was my hand healing quite nicely, but unlike most hand surgery patients, Dr. Rosenfield said I didn't even need physical therapy. Uh. Huh.
I know. I'm not every patient. The average age of the person in Dr. Rosenfield's waiting room was 25 years older than me. The standard of care for the average person is to wear the splint all the time. But I know my body better than any doctor. I know when something's not right and I know when I can veer from the standard of care.
Dr. Rosenfield has given me a much smaller removable splint to wear for another few weeks. And I wear it...sometimes when I feel like following doctor's orders.
