Black History Month: Preserving communities

Story by Michele Wright / CBS 12 News Anchor

PALM BEACH, Fla.-- Every February we honor the accomplishments of African American pioneers and their contributions throughout U.S. history.

This year's national black history theme is "At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality." In part 1 of our five-part Black History month series CBS 12's Michele Wright explores the local connection to this annual celebration.

Americans have recognized black history since 1926 because of Dr. Carter G. Woodson's vision. He was known as the Father of Black History Month. Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines. He graduated high school within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard.

Florida has a rich and diverse history. African American landmarks and legacies exist in various locations throughout the state. In our neighborhoods and schools, we recognize many advancements by African Americans in our local museums and communities.

St. Lucie Historical Society & Museum displays its pride of Treasure Coast Black Heritage.

Pleasant City is the oldest African American community in West Palm Beach. The Pioneers of Pleasant City had a deep devotion to family and community. Early settlers deposited the artifacts, memorabilia, and oral history is displayed in the Pleasant City Heritage Gallery.

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County holds archives and data of local trail-blazers documenting prominent people and places that African Americans influenced.

Rivieria Beach is Florida's most dynamic and diverse waterfront community. By 1907, the first black school, Hope Sound, was founded.

The Spady Museum, is expanding and preserving the rich cultural heritage of Delray Beach.

In Southern Palm Beach County, African American descendents still live in Boca Raton's Pearl City.

With racial tensions high, development of the Urban League of Palm Beach County in 1972, finally united people of all races that could relate to everyone to break down the color lines and barriers. Celebrating the fact that black history is American history.

Mark your calendars to join us every Thursday for a journey through African American history and the introductions to local pioneers in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.
