CBS 12's Extraordinary People: King & Queen of Senior Prom

TEQUESTA, Fla.-- Dust off the party favors, sparklers, tiara, corsage and break out the bubbly...it's time for the Senior Prom during this year's National Assisted Living Week. It's a fun time for all to come together to make residents feel extra special with dazzling activities and events.

Karen Kenneth-Schmid is the outreach director at Tequesta Terrace Assisted Living. They've been a leader for 10 years in providing quality senior care.

"We had Grandparents Day and Mayor Paterno of Tequesta gave us a proclamation to celebrate this week. Today is an example of how we celebrate our seniors in our communities as you can see from the footage..it's a great great party."

A great party indeed...perfect for all the residents, staff & volunteers to put on their dancing shoes in honor of the newly crowned Senior Prom King Tom Kirby and Senior Prom Queen Mildred Mercadante. They were nominated by all the other residents in a top secret ballot process. The dynamic duo were truly surprised at the honor. Chosen because of the great things they do for others at the facility.

SENIOR PROM QUEEN: Mildred Mercadante
"I want to say thank you, thank you to all you wonderful people at Tequesta Terrace Assisted Living."

SENIOR PROM KING: Thomas "Tom" Kirby
"Thank you to all who worked so hard. I'm really having a good time and I have a great queen here with Mildred."

Tom and Mildred were joined by professional dancers and singers to celebrate the special occasion. Vincent Giannone was one of the hosts. He proudly summed up the evening.

"We're all young at heart. We may be old in age, but we're young at heart."
