CBS 12's Extraordinary People: Foster kids see brighter future with Cameras for Kids Foundation

SOUTH FLORIDA, Fla.-- A photograph represents many things to many people.  To a foster child, its a happy memory, place or person they love captured in the camera's frame. Betsey Chesler, is the founder of the non-profit organization Cameras for Kids Foundation. The mission...to afford foster teens the opportunity to create art through photography.

"We have been in the united states for the last three years expanding... And we most recently in May spent a week in Haiti and we went to an orphanage there where there were 30 children that lost their parents in the earthquake of 2010".

With many children getting lost in the cracks, Betsey & her board are passionate. She and her talented instructors provide fun, educational workshops. Gaining an artistic eye on life could make a big difference in their young lives. She hopes the skills they gain, will allow the teens to pursue creative career paths that utilize photography. This week the kids attended a very special photoshoot with the Miami Marlins hosted by their community foundation.

"We regularly with our students take them somewhere for a photoshoot. It can be a park a zoo, it can be butterfly world and in this case we were fortunate enough that the Marlins agreed to let us come and photograph the players prior to a game and the kids are thrilled".

Betsey says seeing the smiles on the students faces was priceless. One student tells me this was the time of her life.

"I've gone to baseball games but this is a whole different experience. And so I got to see the players. We got to take pictures different compositions. It was really exciting. I was glad that we all got to share to participate in this program that helps us do what we love to do, cause we love to take pictures."

Given a purpose and the chance to reach their goals, Cameras for Kids Foundation hopes to partner with others to continue to help the dreams of foster kids come true locally and across the world. Reporting at the Marlins Stadium, Michele Wright, CBS 12 News.
