Kids join neighborhood watch after string of break-ins

Delray Beach Police investigate a string of day time break-ins...including three in the same street just in the last few days. The thieves target electronics and other valuables. And there are some people now with their sights set on the burglars.

Delray Beach Police officers say this is not only happening here, it's happening all over. It may be teens out of school with too much time on their hands. It may be something else. But officers are getting some help from some unlikely crime fighters.

It seems quiet. But SW 18th street in Delray Beach has seen a lot of action in the last week.

"You know, one , two, three kind of, Right here in this one block, said Erin Houlihan. She is way too familiar with this outbreak of break-ins. About a block away, in the Seacrest Circle neighborhood, at her father's house, she caught a thief in the act.

"He saw me and he was running out with a big plasma and he dropped the plasma hopped in his car... Literally went through the bushes to not hit me and my car," Houlihan.

Another neighbor with a surveillance camera caught a guy casing a house. Police say he's a possible a suspect. The recent break-ins has Houlihan's son, Eddie, worried about his own house.

"We might lose a lot of stuff and there might be bad things happening," Eddie told us.

But that's where Eddie's friends come in. They all live this neighborhood where the break-ins have been happening mostly during the day.

These youngsters are the fresh faces of crime prevention in Delray Beach. .

"We're going on the road just going around and keeping an eye out just making sure no one goes in," said Zealand Ching. She's the oldest of the group. And her brother has a warning for any other burglars who might be looking for new targets.

"I would say they would be really dumb to do that because I guess they want to go to jail for some reason," said Spyder Ching.

They'll be out, watching and ready to call their parents for help if they see anything suspicious.

Police say these guys... Seem to be looking for easy targets... While people are at work.

They say they are targeting flat screen tvs and electronic. So make sure you lock your doors, and  close the blinds. And keep that stuff out of sight.. And you might avoid becoming a target.
