Fire Marshal: beware of YouTube bombs

PALM BEACH COUNTY-- The ingredients to make home-made pressure bombs are posted on videos all over YouTube and that has the Palm Beach County Fire Marshal's office concerned.

Especially after 9-year-old Ryan Gooding of Palm Springs was sent to the hospital and underwent surgery after a 2-liter soda bottle exploded on his face, causing severe facial injuries.

"There are all sorts of crazy things on the internet that you can find on YouTube," said Deputy Fire Marshal Jeff Collins.

He advises if you can hide your household chemicals, the better. But at the same time inform your children of the dangers of mixing items that alone may seem harmless.

Collins says children should be told that mixing any chemicals under pressure will force the container to explode and pose a danger to them and more.

"What can happen is they will mix more chemicals than what they see on YouTube. With more chemicals, come bigger reactions and perhaps a bigger fire, bigger explosion," added Collins.

The deputy fire marshal says parents and children can learn from Gooding's mistake.

Collins says kids need to know that mixing chemicals can lead to a dangerous reaction that they will regret the rest of their lives.
