Couple almost duped out of $3,000; store personnel step in

STUART -- Customer service clerks at a grocery store talked an elderly couple out of sending almost $3,000 to a pick-up location in London, England, after someone posing as their grandson called and asked for bail money.

The couple told police they received the call Saturday at 1:00 p.m. from a man who identified himself as their grandson. The caller said he had been arrested in Niagara Falls, Canada, on a drug charge.

The alleged grandson asked that $2,796 in bail money be wired for his release. The couple went to a Winn Dixie store and were in the process of sending the money when store personnel persuaded them to investigate further.

The couple went home and made some telephone calls and discovered their grandson was in Cape Coral, Florida, and had no knowledge of the incident.
