Bear hunting applications

Starting Monday, Florida Fish and Wildlife will be accepting applications for bear hunting permits for the first time in more than 20 years.

The state agency will allow bear hunting, within limits, for a week-long season at the end of October.

FWC will not limit the number of permits that are given, but hunters will be restricted to killing only one bear.

FWC will allow nearly 300 bears to be killed in 4 designated areas around the state. The season could wrap up early depending on how quickly hunters reach that number.

Environmentalist and animal rights groups have voiced their concerns about lifting a bear hunting restriction meant to protect the bear population.

FWC has looked to hunting as a way to control a growing bear population in the state, after more bears have been spotted closer to residential areas.

Permits will range from $100 to $300 depending on whether you live in Florida or out of the state.

You can apply for the permits at an FWC location or online at

DIRTY DOZEN | Produce with highest pesticides
There is a growing trend toward buying organic food, but avoiding chemicals in your food doesn't mean strictly shopping at Whole Foods. The Environmental Working Group, an organization that tests pesticides in produce, releases a list of the produce you should always buy organic and the fruits and vegetables that are safe no matter whether you buy organic or not.

Farmer’s Table restaurant in Boca Raton relies on the Environmental Working Group’s lists. Executive Chef Wilson Wieggel says with the amount of business they do " it’s nearly impossible to buy all local produce.

“We're not 100% organic, but we do buy local as much as possible and we adhere to the Environmental Working Group's dirty dozen,” says Wieggel.

The Dirty Dozen is the list of the produce with the highest amount of pesticides and topping that list is the Apple. Farmer Jason McCobb, who describes his method of farming as “beyond organic” says production is high on the apple and when production is high " typically so is the amount of pesticides used.

Dirty Dozen:

1)    Apples
2)    Peaches
3)    Nectarines
4)    Strawberries
5)    Grapes
6)    Celery
7)    Spinach
8)    Sweet bell peppers
9)    Cucumbers
10)    Cherry Tomatoes
11)    Snap Peas
12)    Potatoes

The Clean 15, on the other hand, either have a thick skin on the outside or typically are grown with fewer chemicals.

“These are the 15 things you don’t necessarily need to buy organic. They don’t require a lot of pesticides,” says McCobb,

Clean 15:

1)    Avocados
2)    Sweet Corn
3)    Pineapples
4)    Cabbage
5)    Frozen sweet peas
6)    Onions
7)    Asparagus
8)    Mangos
9)    Papayas
10)    Kiwi
11)    Eggplant
12)    Grapefruit
13)    Cantaloupe
14)    Cauliflower
15)    Sweet Potatoes

Know Your Rights Before Signing a Gym Contract

January is one of the busiest months of the year for Floridians to join gyms, and many consumers sign membership contracts. Here are a few tips to follow before you sign:
Make sure the gym is currently registered with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
Contact our consumer protection and information hotline by calling 1-800-FL-AYUDA (352-9832) to see if any complaints have been filed against the gym, and if so, how they have been resolved.
If long-term memberships are offered, the contract must contain provisions allowing the contract to be canceled within three business days, excluding weekends and legal holidays.
If a gym closes or moves its facilities more than five miles away, it must provide access to an alternate facility of equal quality within five miles of its original location at no additional cost to its members.

Dr. Bafitis is located here:

-There's a revolutionary plastic surgery procedure that's becoming all the rage. There is only one guy locally doing it,but he says he can't get patients in and out the door fast enough for thisthing, because it's surgery, while you are awake!

Thenew procedure is called the happy hour awake lipo. Apparently you go in forhappy hour (as long as it would take to get some drinks) and you walk out up to4 dress sizes thinner and can go to work next day.  The only plasticsurgeon in the area doing this procedure is willing to talk.
