'Road Rage' dividing quiet Jupiter Farms neighborhood

JUPITER FARMS, Fla. -- Call it road rage of a different kind. In a quiet Jupiter Farms community, neighbor turns against neighbor over a road paving project. They want cleaner cars but others see a threat to their rural way of life.

"We've got two horses, one miniature horse."

And two mules and a miniature donkey. Welcome to the place in Jupiter Farms where Don and Dorothy Taylor have called home for the past 30 years.

Dorothy Taylor: Jupiter Farms is this really unique, awesome community and I'm trying to keep it that way.

But recently some of the Taylor's neighbors petitioned the South Indian River Water District to pave both the Taylor's street, Winterhawk Trail, and the adjoining 175th Road North. Once project costs are established the land owners on the two streets will vote on whether to pave.

Taylor: We moved out here because we want dirt roads. We don't want street lights.

Taylor asks where will she and the other nearby horse owners ride?

Taylor: Soon this equestrian community is going to be completely squeezed out. And this equestrian community is incredibly important to Palm Beach County.

Other neighbors though tell us if the current dirt roads were paved over they'd have cleaner cars.

We spoke to three different people, who live down 175th Road, but one of them wanted to go on camera, and most of them said it was because this paving issue had become so controversial in the neighborhood.

Taylor says a big majority on her street oppose paving. But because there was one petition to pave both roads, there will be one vote among both streets land owners.

Taylor: They're completely diluting our vote. Even though we have 72 percent of the people who don't want it paved, we could lose this. That's un-American.

But the South Indian River Water Board has already approved the referendum. Ballots are expected to reach homeowners in the next couple months.

Each of the 30 to 35 homeowners on the two streets would equally share the cost of the paving, to be paid on their yearly tax bills. Homeowners will find out how much it will cost them before they vote.
