Turnpike toll increase: Where does it go?

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Starting this weekend you'll need more pocket change for the Turnpike.

Sunday
morning drivers across Florida can expect a 25 cent increase at
tollbooths, but money collected locally doesn't mean it's going to be
spent locally.

Chad Huff/ Turnpike spokesperson: About a quarter for SunPass and cash customers.

It's the first system-wide toll hike since a 2007 Florida statute required the price of tolls to match the rate of inflation.

Huff/ Turnpike spokesperson: It's what we call the consumer price index
and we are mandated, we have to do that every five years.

It's
been five years that means 25 cents more on average per car. The higher
prices will be used to leverage nearly $2 billion for future
construction across the state.

Huff/ Turnpike spokesperson: Keep in mind these increases are
throughout the entire Turnpike system and some of that money will go
statewide.

Lance Read: I don't know if there's much we can do about it, but it seems the money in this county should stay in this county.

But
not all of it will. Money allocated from the increased toll prices
statewide will make it easier to transition cash lanes to SunPass lanes
across portions of Dade and Broward Counties. Commuters using the
Turnpike are split on the price change.

This is the first time SunPass users are seeing a toll hike since the program began in 1999.
