I-95 reopens after fire, smoke nears highway
VERO BEACH, Fla. -- As of 5 p.m. Thursday, I-95 is back open after heavy smoke and flames came dangerously close to the highway this morning. The area of concern along I-95 where three different brush fires were burning, spans between mile marker 155 in Sebastian and mile marker 147 in Vero Beach.
Late on the 4th, real fire-work. Emergency managers reported high winds and frequent lightning.
Joe Debree/Florida Forest Service: If we get the rain with the lightning that's ay, but if we just get the lightning with little to no rain that doesn't help us out. Right now we are hoping we do have some more showers come through here.
Three lightning woodland fires burn close to I-95. In the woods lining the highway between the Vero Beach and Sebastian interchanges, with thick smoke all along State Road 512.
Joe Debree/Florida Forest Service: Little to no rain that sparked 3 different lightning strikes, 3 different brush fires. One here on the east side of I-95, and 2 off the west side.
The smoke was heavy enough to shut down the interstate for a few hours today, but no homes were threatened.
Joe Debree/Florida Forest Service: If it reduces visibility less than 1,000 feet it starts becoming a safety issue and you don't have enough time to react to other vehicles if something else is in the road, so if we get too much smoke we have to shut it down for safety reasons.
The fire itself got within feet of the highway but was beat back. Now Florida Forest Service officials are keeping watch, not only for flare ups from the ground, but lightning from the sky.
