Future freshman class pitches in to prepare their new St. Lucie West charter school

ST. LUCIE WEST, Fla. -- The first charter high school on the Treasure Coast...counting down the days until it opens and getting much needed help from the community and future freshman class.

If you know a teenager, you'll find this hard to believe.

Brianna Zerger/Charter School Freshman: I've been cleaning out classrooms, helping with the paperwork, painting..anything that needs to be done.

Clearing brush on campus, painting entire rooms. Brianna Zerger comes most every summer day to the new College Preparatory Academy of the Treasure Coast. It is the first new charter high school ever in St. Lucie County.

Brianna Zerger/Charter School Freshman: We're here because we want to be here.

Erika Raines/Principal: Its been a two and a half year fight to get here. We are finally here and so close to opening, and the fact so many people stepped up, it reconfirms this was the right time and place to do this.

Principal Erika Raines is a non-stop energy machine for the new school.

Erika Raines/Principal: I'm so excited how into it they are and the parents too. I had a dad on vacation, he did not take a single day of his vacation. He spent the entire time in this room right here.

A new scholars cafe in school colors.

Erika Raines/Principal: I think if traditional schools welcomed this much involvement, theyd be more successful. I don't believe that it isn't, from what I've heard from my parents, its that there isn't the opportunity.

Businesses like Benjamin Moore and Regal paints donated paint. Contractors donate time.

Erika Raines/Principal: Lowes called us the other day and said don't let em buy anything else, buy gift cards and we will match you dollar for dollar.

Proving it truly takes a village, and a few freshman, to get the job done.

Brianna Zerger/Charter School Freshman: This is what makes this school best.

They say they will be ready to open on the first day of school August 20. There are still spots for the freshman class at the college prep charter high school and it's free tuition and free transportation.Future freshman class pitches in to prepare their new St. Lucie West charter school
