East Boca residents upset over sidewalk propsal

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Northeast 30th street in East Boca Raton has very little traffic and no sidewalks, but that could change. The city of Boca Raton is considering putting in sidewalks that would cut through the lawns. However, residents tell us if the city goes through with it, it's a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Residents living on northeast 30th Street near Dixie Highway are nervous their lawns will be cut up by a meandering five foot wide slab of concrete.

Carmen: I don't want sidewalks.

Virginia: We don't need to waste the taxpayer money on this kind of project. We need the money for something else.

According to a second voter ballot residents tell us city workers passed out, the proposed sidewalk would be used as a route to a school a couple of miles away.

Robert: The whole point of this is safe for school kids, some areas need it, this area does not.

Carmen: Very few children that walk on this street.

City of Boca Raton would not comment on the proposed plans or the cost. But recent projects cost upwards of tens of thousands to six figures or more.

Bill Stelyn: I've lived here for 17 years not one child has ever been hit no person, nothing.

Virginia: It's just a waste of taxpayer money.

Bill Stelyn tells us he feels the city isn't listening to residents and wants to know why the sidewalks are still up for debate since a meeting in November.

Bill Steyln: Once we voted, no answer came back to us and now they have another full ballot saying that they're going to vote, what happened to the first one? And everyone saying no?

Residents tell CBS 12 they've filled out ballots twice, once in November and once about a week ago, asking whether or not they wanted sidewalks put in you can see this one clearly says no. Boca officials will not tell us the way residents voted and neither confirm nor deny the status of the sidewalk project.
