Senate panel approves increase in airline fee to fund TSA

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- You may have to pay more to be patted down and scanned by the Transportation Security Administration. A Senate panel has approved an increase in airline security fees which would help fund the TSA.

You already know what it feels like to be nickel and dimed by the airlines, now the government wants more of your money to fund the TSA which the government admits has a problem wasting tax dollars. One-way fees for passengers would increase from $2.50 to $5.

It's part of the The 2013 Homeland Security Appropriations bill that would help the TSA close a budget shortfall. Supporters of the fee say the $315 million in funding would otherwise come from taxpayers and believe it is better to charge passengers, who rely on TSA. Opponents say the fee would hurt an airline industry already reeling from a weak economy and high fuel prices, not to mention multi-passenger families.

Dana Cashman/traveling with family: That adds up to be a lot. There are five of us traveling. On the way here we had seven, and that's a lot of money, that's $100 tacked on, that's a lot.

Joey Lyon/traveler: I think if you look at any government agency there's going to be wasteful spending. So that aspect doesn't surprise me at all.

A House Oversight Committee recently went after the TSA for persistent waste. According to the committee, nearly 6,000 pieces of security equipment are currently sitting in a TSA warehouse wasting hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars.

The TSA funding bill still has to be approved by the House and Senate. A similar House bill last year failed because of opposition by Republicans. The current effort faces long odds in an election year. Senate panel approves increase in airline fee to fund TSA
