Inmate hanged himself at Broward County jail

A 38-year-old man hanged himself in the Broward County jail Tuesday night.

Investigators said a detention deputy was conducting a security check around 9 p.m. when an inmate told him his cellmate, John Hammond, had just hanged himself.

The deputy got Hammond down and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until medical staff arrived. Hammond was transported to Broward General Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 9:48 p.m.

Hammond was in jail on grand theft auto charges.

The Broward Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
