Drunk Treasure Coast woman charged with DUI with kids in vehicle

AP

Authorities say a Treasure Coast woman was drunk when she crashed a sport utility vehicle and caused injuries for five children inside.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that 33-year-old Fredrina Yvonne Johnson was driving in Fort Pierce early Thursday morning when she hit a curb, a stop sign and then a utility pole. A trooper who responded to the crash reported that Johnson was belligerent and smelled like alcohol.

Johnson acknowledged that she had been drinking but denied driving. The five children told the trooper that she was drunk and had been driving fast.

Johnson declined to take a breath test to determine her blood-alcohol level.

Johnson faces 16 charges, including DUI with injury and child endangerment.
