Watching the Rails: Law Enforcement Patrolling Tracks Tuesday
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Four-County Effort to Cover 100 Miles of Railway
A terror threat on the New York City subway system. One of the most horrific attacks in India's history.
While there have been a couple of major terrorism-related events in the past week, officials say a local anti-terror effort was in the works well before then.
"[We have to] keep the bad guys on their toes, bad folks on their toes," said Captain Nancy Grimes with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.
PBSO is one of two dozen federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies taking part in Operation "Transit Shield" on Tuesday.
The initiative is an anti-terror effort involving hundreds of law enforcement agents patrolling nearly 100 miles of railway in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. Officials are also hoping to raise public awareness when it comes to terror threats at home.
Grimes added that it's always important that the public remain on alert -- and vigilant, despite the fact that there has never been an attack on south Florida's railway system.
"Either we're doing a very good job or we just haven't been targeted yet, so we have to be very vigilant and try to stay on top of things," Grimes added.
The push kicked off at 6:30 am Tuesday and stretched through the morning commute at local train stations and local railways. Not all of the stepped-up security will be visible to the public, officials said.
Operation "Transit Shield" is coordinated by members of the Southeast Regional Domestic Security Task Force, which includes law enforcement from the Palm Beaches all the way down to Miami.
