Local Libraries Packed
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Cost Conscious Customers get free access to books, movies, music, computers
C-D's, D-V-D's all for free...oh yeah, there are plenty of books too. Of course we are talking about your local library. And when all of us seem to have less cash to spend, more people are spending their time at the library. And some libraries are even setting records.
The main branch of the Palm Beach County library circulated seven and a half million itmes. That's books CD's DVD's ect. That's a million more itmes than last year.
They're bringing the books to the check out counter by the basket. And these days it's not just books bringing people to public library, says county library director John Callahan.
"If we were open 24 hours a day, I think there would probably be people there", says Callahan.
Behind every stack of books, there's a work station or cubicle full. The same goes for every computer. Jerry Gordon, a substitute teacher, who is looking for a full time teaching job... saves money by using the library's computers.
"I'm here nearly every day and most evening and weekends because I don't have a computer at home and I need access to a computer", says Gordon.
But like everyone else here, he'll have to wait 25 minutes to find an open computer.
Local libraries are also attracting moms like Natasha Pierre. She brings her kids and others from her neighborhood for a reading and language program... Free of charge.
"It would cost a lot, and imagine, like every two weeks we com and she'll pick up six books and we, Sydney and all of them six books. Now we are going to learn to read French", says Pierre.
And as Jean Barnett told us the library is making movie night easy and affordable... When not much else is these days.
"I mean movies, the movies, you know how expensive the movies are with two kids. But we can get a movie here for days and take it home", says Barnett.
With local governments making a lot of cutbacks...the palm beach county library system has avoid major cuts.
But they did say they they have had to hold off on building a new main branch and a new branch in Belle Glade until the economy improves.
