A section of the Florida turnpike in southwest Miami-Dade was shutdown after a deadly police accident this morning.

The accident occurred just after 4 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the turnpike near SW 152 Street.

Sources say Miami Dade Police Officer Giovanni Gonzalez rear ended a dump truck. A yellow tarp was thrown over the driver's side of the patrol car as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel worked to free the officer trapped inside.

Sadly, the 23-year old Gonzalez inside the cruiser was killed, according to Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Det. Rebeca Perez. Perez told CBS 4 in Miami that the officer had been on the force for a year and a half and worked out of the Kendall District.

A short distance away from the heavily damaged cruiser a dump truck was pulled off onto the shoulder.  The truck's passenger side and rear bumper showed signs of damage.  Det. Perez also confirmed the police cruiser and dump truck collided but it's not known who was at fault.

All southbound lanes of the turnpike from SW 120th Street to SW 152nd Street were shutdown.
