Local woman killed in the Bahamas

Nassau Guardian Newspaper

A newspaper in the Bahamas say police expect to charge a man with American woman's murder.

As local police enlist the help of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the case of an American woman whose badly decomposed was found in New Providence over the weekend, investigators say they plan to charge a 22-year-old Bahamian man with her death.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Central Detective Unit's headquarters on Thompson Boulevard yesterday, Assistant Commissioner of Police Raymond Gibson said police had taken a 22-year-old resident of Lightbourne Avenue into custody for questioning shortly after the body of Anna Michelle Garrison was discovered Saturday evening.

Gibson said the suspect is expected to be charged with Garrison's murder "sometime later this week". He also said that police have not determined a motive in the murder.

Gibson said that police are also looking to question one of Garrison's male relatives in connection with the murder.

"Bahamian police are also seeking the assistance of the F.B.I. and the United States Embassy in locating an American relative of the deceased," he said.

According to investigators, Garrison, a 33-year-old resident of West Palm Beach, Florida, was first reported missing to Bahamian police on February 25, 2009 when the U.S Embassy alerted police that she was missing and may be in the company of a Bahamian man in The Bahamas.

Gibson added that the West Palm Beach resident had been a frequent visitor to The Bahamas since 2005 and was living in the eastern New Providence area before her death.

He said Garrison was last seen alive in New Providence in January 2009.

Months after her disappearance, Garrison's badly decomposed body was found concealed in a plastic bag and wrapped in a bed sheet near Fox Hill Creek around 6 p.m. on Saturday by a passerby.

Police said they suspect her body was dumped on the side of the road 24 to 48 hours before she was found.

Gibson said yesterday that police believe the U.S. citizen had been dead months before her body was discarded and recently found.

In the meantime, officers are still awaiting the results of an autopsy that will determine the exact cause of Garrison's death.
