Toddler drowns in backyard pool

A 4-year old boy died at a friend's house during a swimming pool play date on Sunday.

Officials say about 3:40 p.m. Sunday, 4-year old Jordan Cherestal of Royal Palm Beach drowned in a backyard pool at friend's house at 2411 Westmont Drive.

Jordan's mother had dropped him and his twin brother off at the house to go swimming with two children ages 6 and 7 who live there.

Detectives say the man who lives there, Mark Jenkins, left his own kids in the pool because they know how to swim, and he took Jordan and his twin brother in the house for a moment to get something.

He left the twins in the living room for a second, and he left the sliding glass door open just enough that Jordan and his brother were able to walk outside to the pool.

When he returned to the living room, the twins were gone and seconds later he found Jordan's body on the bottom of the pool.

"Oh it's absolutely horrific! I have two kids of my own and it's just, it's gut-wrenching," said Charles Campbell, a neighbor.

"Oh it's, it's a tragic event. I mean you keep 'em as close as you can. But you can never, you know, you can't keep an eye on 'em 24-7. You do the best you can," said David Lopes, who lives down the street.

"You hear this on the news and it's always someone else. But when it happens to your neighborhood it's really shocking," said Gerald Boyd, another neighbor.

A sheriff's detective says Jenkins believes he only left the twins alone for about two minutes.

Jenkins pulled the boy out of the water, and performed C-P-R and called 9-1-1.

Fire-rescue rushed the four year old to Palms West, but he could not be revived.

We could not reach Jenkins or the victim's mother for comment.

A sheriff's detective says they will review what happened, and so will the state attorney's office to determine if any charges are warranted.

Again, right now though, no one has been charged and it's being treated as an accident.
