More Than 100 Students Out Sick From Hobe Sound Elementary School

More than 100 kids sick at a Hobe Sound Elementary School. Tthe Health Department is investigating to figure out what's going on as the school scrubs everything from top to bottom.

Sent home from school, 2 brothers sick to their stomachs. T.J Kenny says, " During recess I had this really bad burning pain in my throat and stomach, then I started to get dizzy so I went to the Nurse's office."

T.J and Tyler Kenny started feeling nauseous on Monday. By Thursday they were throwing up. Nne year-old Tyler has severe asthma. The illness causing his lungs to close up, "Today I had a really bad headache and my arms felt weak and my stomach hurt really bad."

So, instead of heading to Hobe Sound Elementary School they were at home healing and, "Eating soup," says Tyler.

On Wednesday, 118 kids were out sick. By Thursday, the number up to 124 calling in sick and parents telling us another 30 being sent home. Parent, Michelle Shrout, says, "I got the call last night from the principal saying an abnormal amount of students got sent home yesterday so to keep your child if they are sick."

Kids say the nausea and vomiting is no fun. Little Enrique McClain says, "My stomach hurts real bad." Emily Leimer says, "I have a really bad stomachache and I feel like I am going to vomit."

The school got a thorough cleaning. Every surface and every keyboard was wiped down. The Martin County Health Department is searching for a cause. Parent Donna Omanoff says "I am glad someone is coming to investigate and I am glad people are paying attention."

As for the Kenny brothers, Friday they will head to the doctor and spend the rest of the day resting up.

If your child is sick, Martin County School District Officials urge you to keep your kid at home. If they are healthy, Officials say there is no reason for them not to be in classes on Friday.

The Martin County Health Department says right now they do not know the source of these illnesses. The agency has been interviewing all of the sick kids by phone. Workers are asking things like: What did you eat for lunch? Did you bring your lunch? Where do you get your drinking water?

Also, biological samples have been taken to a lab for testing. Bob Washam with the Health Department says, "Mostly we look for patterns to see what is happening and we are also going to be looking at the lab results and just kind of detective work." Cathy Brennan with the Martin County School District says, "We don't know of those 124 students how many were actually experiencing these symptoms. We do know they weren't in school today, they could have been out for other reasons."
