State Reports Security Breach
Personal Information On The Internet
The Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation says they have had a security breach. It involves the names and Social Security numbers of people served at the state's Career Centers between January 2002 and November 2007.
The agency's director says the personal information was on the Web for 19 days before it was discovered by another state agency. She says the information was immediately removed and her office contacted the major Internet search engines and providers to make sure the information did not wind up somewhere else on the Web.
The agency started mailing letters this week to people were affected. "We started sending out the letters at the beginning of this week. We're sending them out by the thousands because we obviously want to make sure that we get that information out as quickly as possible," said Monesia Brown, Director of Agency for Workforce Innovation.
The office is reviewing its policies. So far, no one has been disciplined as a result of the security breach. It's not known if anyone's social security number has been used illegally.
