Local Soldier Fatally Stabbed

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

A local soldier killed not on the battelfield, but on home soil.

And the person who killed him? Police say it was a fellow soldier who had just come back from Iraq.

This makes the the second time in less than a month that there's been a deadly attack at a U.S. Army base.

In this latest case, two soldiers were found stabbed to death at an apartment building near Fort Drum, New York. The victims are identified as Waide James, 20, of Port St. John, Florida and Diego Valbuena, 23, of Port St. Lucie.

Another soldier, Joshua Hunter, 20, has been arrested in Ohio for their murders.

Just last month, there was a massacre at a base in Ft. Hood, Texas that killed 13 soldiers.

"The reaction is absolutely gut-wrenching sorrow, and here we go again," said Jack Luther of Jensen Beach.

"I'm not surprised, I'm not surprised. It's gonna keep happening until we start treating the problem," said his wife Ginny Luther.

Jack and Ginny Luther know the pain of  such a tragedy.   Their son, Lt. Robert Fletcher,  was murdered at Ft.Hood a year ago by another soldier who then committed suicide.

They say the Army needs better counseling for soldiers and their families before they deploy overseas and when they get home to help them cope.

"I don't know soldiers that come back and aren't affected in some way by what they've been immersed in, which is you know, terrorizing situations," Ginny said.
