A Final Fix For Singer Island?
Comments 0 | Recommend 0People in one local city could finally be getting something they've been begging for, for years....that's a long term solution to the problem of beach erosion on Singer Island.
We've been reporting on the battle with mother ocean and her powerful waves for years. When the beach starts to disappear, the only option before was to dump sand out here, a temporary solution at best. But now there might be a better way.
"I fell very much relieved because it's something that's finally going to come to fruition, says Michael Triozzi.
It's what he and hundreds of other people on Singer Island have been wanting for years, a permanent solution to the ongoing problem of beach erosion on the barrier island.
"It's scary. I get very apprehensive when I hear there is going to be a storm, or a tropical depression and I just hope and pray that they don't turn into hurricanes", Triozzi.
Riviera Beach City Council members just approved a plan to find 6 million dollars to pay for the construction of breakwaters off the coast of Singer Island. The would look similar to these that have already been built off the coast in Israel. The six million dollars would be the city's part...with the state and county paying the majority of the construction costs. Triozzi, director of the Singer Island Civic Association says approval of the plan couldn't come fast enough.
"To protect the beaches. To protect the condos. And to protect what we have now. Because it can't get any worse. We can't allow it to get any worse", Triozzi.
He, and other say the previous fix of dumping truck load after truck load on the beach can only continue for so long.
"It's like putting a patch on a flat tire or filling a flat tire with that can of stuff. It's just temporary", he says.
But the breakwaters, he says will be the permanent fix everyone is looking for.
"Everybody sleeps a lot easier I believe", Triozzi says.
There is some concern that the plan could get side tracked by all the groups that would be involved. That included groups from the state, local, and federal government. They hope this plan for breakwaters doesn't get bogged down in red tape before the beach and condos disappear.
