Man Charged With Street Racing Crash

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

What police call a street race down a busy local thoroughfare, wrecked not only cars, but many people's lives too.  Tuesday afternoon Michel Jean-Baptiste appeared in court, charged with the deaths of two teenagers.

Police say Jean-Baptiste of Lantana, was driving one of two cars racing up Congress Avenue in Boynton Beach Monday afternoon. Officers say the racing cars both crossed the median colliding with cars coming from the other direction.  People in those cars went to the hospital, but survived.  The two teenagers in the other racing car, a Mustang, both died at the scene.   Driver 17-year old Luis Garcia of Palm Springs, was thrown from the car. Passenger 18-year old Delve Malone of suburban West Palm Beach, was belted in, but trapped in the flipped Mustang.

At the court hearing, the judge set bond for Jean-Baptiste at 25-thousand dollars.  His wife, Kemmly Dieujuste, attended with the couple's 1-week old baby.  After court Dieujuste said little, but told CBS 12, "I don't know nothing about anything. I was in the house. I don't know" what happened.  She shed tears as she left the building.

Garcia's family was also at the hearing, but declined comment afterward.  We spoke to members of Malone's family at his home. They told us Malone was a good kid and that Malone and Garcia were best friends, attending the same charter school and working at the same fast food restaurant.

In the arrest report, investigators say Jean-Baptiste told them his cousin was actually driving his car.  But officers say they found the keys in Jean-Baptiste's pocket and witnesses placed him beind the wheel.  The report says Jean-Baptiste told investigators he had been drinking.  Officers took blood samples.
