Meal Deals: Giant Dinner Sandwich
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Think of a sandwich and you probably think of lunch, but after this recipe you may think dinner. Chief David Pantone with the Florida Culinary Institute shows how a sandwich can taste great, satisfy your appetite and save you money. At a restaurant you will pay more than 5 dollars for a meal like this, but you can make it for yourself for 2 bucks a portion.
Giant Sandwich of Italian Sausage, Pepper, and Mozzarella Cheese
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup water
1 pound Italian sausage, your choice of mild or hot
4 bell peppers, your choice of colors, large dice
1 large onion, cut in half and sliced thick
3 cloves garlic, crushed
1 long loaf of French bread, cut lengthwise, but not all of the way through. Should still be one piece.
2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
In a large skillet over medium high heat, place oil, water, sausage, peppers, onions, and garlic. Cover with a lid and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and let cook, stirring periodically until peppers and onions are soft and start to brown. Remove pan from heat. Remove sausage from pan and let cool for 5 minutes. Slice sausage into smaller pieces. Add back to pan and mix to incorporate. Open bread and fill with sausage and pepper mixture. Top with mozzarella. Bake in 375* oven until cheese is melted and starts to brown.
