Single mom attending inauguration with her son, the 10-year-old reporter
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Local celebrity Damon Weaver is still hoping for an interview with President-Elect, Barack obama.
A local 10-year old is preparing for the experience of a lifetime. Damon Weaver, a 5th grader at Canal Point Elementary, who has become a celebrity with his love for news reporting, is one of the lucky few to have a ticket to President-Elect Barack Obama's Inauguration.
And while he is looking forward to next week's trip, he continues hoping that he will have a chance to interview the next president of the United States.
Over the past several months, Damon Weaver has become Pahokee's little star. At home, he loves to play football with his friends, but at school he is beginning a future in broadcasting as a reporter. Weaver has already interviewed Miami Heat star Dwayne Wade and Vice-President Elect Joe Biden. But Weaver really wants to land that big interview with Obama.
Weaver recently learned that he would be given a ticket to Obama's inauguration ceremony next week, as well as press credentials to a few events.
"I have press credentials for a parade... And this Disney Channel concert that they're putting on in Washington D.C.," said Weaver.
The little celebrity even has journalists with the Associated Press following him around, but says he doesn't mind the stardom.
For his mother, Regina Weaver, watching him accomplish so much at the age of 10 makes working two jobs to support five children alone worth the struggle.
"When he first started with the project, I was like OK, you can do that, " she said. " Then he interviewed Dwayne Wade and some other basketball players and prominent people like Caroline Kennedy. ... And I was like OK.. .. He is really doing what he said he was going to do."
The next step for Weaver is to pack his bags for his trip to D.C. Sunday. But before he goes, he is making his proverbial plea to interview Obama one more time, hoping that the president elect makes just a little bit of time to grant him a few minutes on camera.
Weaver will be the only kid with press credentials at next week's inauguration, and he will attend an inaugural ball on Sunday where he is sure to meet many celebrities who also plan on attending. His mother and his teacher, Brian Anderson also got tickets to the inauguration.
