Standford Stevens was taken down by police after he went back to the Harvest Outreach Foodbank it Fort Pierce for the fifth time to try and pass off a bad check.
Four times prior, Stevens went in, shopped for hours, spent hundreds of dollars and paid with a check that later bounced. Surveillancve video shows the suspect shopping, each time filling up his cart with hundreds of dollars of discount food. Even after his picture was on the news, police said Stevens came back for more.
The food bank is pressing charges against Stevens since they said they are the ones left footing the more than $400 dollar bill for bounced checks. Directors said any crime at the foodbank is a crime against the community since they help feed 750 families a day. Harvest Outreach said it has never been harder to get quality low-cost food and they have seen the need for grocery assistance double in the last 6 months.
Stevens is in the St. Lucie County Jail charged with up to 6 counts of check fraud. Harvest Outreach in Fort Pierce and in Vero Beach said they will press charges against anyone committing a crime in their centers.
