Stranded Whale
Comments 0 | Recommend 0KEY LARGO, Fla. (AP) - A rare beaked whale that was stranded last Friday off the Florida Keys has been euthanized.
Tests conducted at the Marine Mammal Conservancy in Key Largo found that the whale had a nonfunctioning liver and failed kidneys,
said Robert Lingenfelser, president of the conservancy.
Lingenfelser said the mature female whale's digestive system had also shut down. It was euthanized Monday night.
Lingenfelser said a necropsy is scheduled for Tuesday. The whale was identified as either a Gervais' beaked whale or a
Sowerby's beaked whale. It was discovered Friday in shallow waters behind a home in Islamorada.
