Jobs for local workers; zero cost to employers
WEST PALM BEACH--Hundreds of young adults began new jobs this week. It's a program putting people to work for six weeks this summer. Local businesses are getting qualified workers at zero cost.
Palm Beach Community College Sophomore Chris Gosney has landed a sweet summer job.
He’s taking part in Workforce Alliance's Summer Youth Employment Program. It's funded by $3,000,000 stimulus dollars.
"I can't think of a better thing to do with that money besides enable people to get jobs, said Chris Gosney.
Loxahatchee River District--an organization taking part in the program--is teaching Gosney skills he can use in the future.
"Before I knew it, it was a greater opportunity than I thought it could be,” said Gosney.
A graphics major, the 21-year-old is helping consolidate paper drawings into a computer program for safe keeping. He’s also learning how to use a GPS to map locations on the district’s property.
With plentiful projects and a tight budget, officials with Loxahatchee River District say this program has worked out perfect for their organization.
"I think it's a win-win situation,” said Bud Howard director of water resources with Loxahatchee River District. “We’re able to get a lot accomplished."
Workforce Alliance is still looking for businesses and municipalities who would like to participate. Qualified young adults are also encouraged to still apply.
