UNDATED (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians remain the hottest team in the American League following their third walkoff victory in four games.

Yan Gomes (yahn gohmz) belted a three-run homer in the 10th inning to give the Indians a 10-8 win and their first four-game sweep of the Mariners since 1981. Cleveland trailed in the ninth and 10th innings until Gomes went deep for the second time this afternoon, sending the Indians to their 18th victory in 22 games.

Ryan Raburn socked a three-run homer for the Indians, who took advantage of two misplays by the Mariners' bullpen.

The Indians' fifth straight win gives them a 2 1/2-game lead over Detroit in the AL Central.

Also in the majors, Edwin Encarnacion (ehn-kahr-nah-see-OHN') lined a tiebreaking, three-run double in the bottom of the seventh as Toronto downed Tampa Bay 7-5. Brett Lawrie and Muenori Kawasaki each hit RBI triples to support R.A. Dickey, who allowed just two earned runs and four hits in eight innings.

UNDATED (AP) -- Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard avoided the disabled list after undergoing an MRI on his sore left knee today. Catcher Carlos Ruiz wasn't as lucky.

The Phils say Howard is day to day after battling knee pain for the last two weeks. He's hitting .245 with six homers and 22 RBIs in 41 games and has carved out a .179 average in 16 games this month.

Ruiz is going on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, prompting the Phillies to recall catcher Humberto Cuintero (uhm-BEHR'-toh kihn-TEHR'-oh) from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Ruiz is expected to be out three to four weeks.

The Phils also played reliever Mike Adams on the 15-day DL retroactive to May 11 due to a back strain.

In other major league news, the Rangers have designated 39-year-old pitcher Derek Lowe for assignment to make room for Josh Lindblom, who made his first career big league start against Oakland on Monday. Lowe has allowed 13 runs in 13 innings since making the Rangers out of training camp.

NBA-BOBCATS/NAME CHANGE

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- A person familiar with the situation says Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan is changing his team's name to the Hornets and will announce the decision at a news conference tomorrow. NBA deputy commissioner and COO Adam Silver has said it would take "about 18 months" for the Bobcats to change their name. The nickname became available when the New Orleans Hornets changed theirs to the Pelicans.

NBA-KINGS SALE/HANSEN

SEATTLE (AP) -- Investor Chris Hansen has congratulated Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson on his efforts to keep the NBA's Kings in California but vows to bring an NBA franchise back to Seattle. Hansen's attempts to purchase the Kings and move them to Seattle were denied by the NBA Board of Governors last week in Dallas before Sacramento investors purchased a controlling interest in the team from the Maloof family. Hansen again called on Seattle fans to remain patient in the attempts of his investor group to either purchase an existing franchise or work for an expansion team.

NHL-DUCKS-BEAUCHEMIN

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Anaheim defenseman Francois Beauchemin (BOH'-shih-mihn) underwent successful reconstructive surgery on a ligament in his right knee last Thursday. The Ducks announced Monday that Beauchemin hopes to return in time for the start of next season. The 33-year old is expected to fully recover.

Beauchemin had an outstanding season for the Ducks, getting six goals and 18 assists with a plus-19 rating.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-TRANSFERS

UNDATED (AP) -- Guard Malik Smith has signed his tender to transfer from Florida International to Minnesota, where he will be reunited with new Golden Gophers coach Richard Pitino, son of the Louisville national championship head coach.

Smith averaged 14.1 points per game as a junior starter for FIU last season. He will be eligible to play right away because FIU will be banned from postseason play next season thanks to poor academic performance under previous coach Isiah Thomas.

And Memphis forward Tarik Black is transferring to Kansas and will be eligible to play immediately.

Black has graduated from Memphis and has one year of eligibility left. He averaged 8.1 points and 4.8 rebounds for the Tigers last season, starting five of his 32 games.
