Dolphins to start Tannehill

West Palm Beach, Fl -- Ryan Tannehill will start tonight at quarterback for the dolphins in the second pre season game against the Panthers. The coaches need to see how the rookie does against a first team defense and tonight could give us a real good picture on if Tannehill or Matt Moore will be the dolphins starting quarterback when the season opens on September 9th. It seems things are pretty simple. If Tannehill continues to play well like he did in the first pre season game and in practice, he should be in the driver’s seat. If he doesn't and Matt Moore plays well, the competition will continue. Tannehill's teammates have been impressed with the rookie.Dolphins to start Tannehill

MLB-SCHEDULE

UNDATED (AP) -- The Braves got home runs from B.J. Upton, Ramiro Pena (PAYN'-yuh) and a grand slam from rookie Evan Gattis in an 8-3 win over the Twins. The loss was Minnesota's eighth straight while the win is Atlanta's sixth straight. Vance Worley gave up all three home runs in 3 2-3 innings to fall to 1-5 with a 7.21 ERA. He was demoted to the minors after the game.

In other major league play;

-- Carlos Gonzalez homered and drove in two runs to lead Colorado past Arizona 4-1 to take two of three from the Diamondbacks.

-- Manager Don Mattingly criticized his team before the game, then benched All-Star right fielder Andre Ethier (EE'-thee-ur) and the Dodgers went on to beat Milwaukee 9-2. Mattingly discussed his team's lack of mental toughness with the Dodgers mired in the NL West basement at 19-26. Carl Crawford and Scott Van Sylke each drove in a pair for L.A.

-- Texas used first inning homers by David Murphy and Adrian Beltre (BEHL'-tray) for a 3-1 win over Oakland. Thirty-year old Ross Wolf picked up the win in his first major league start. He last pitched in the majors in 2010 as a reliever for Oakland.

-- Brandon Phillips drove in the go ahead run with a double in the ninth inning and the Reds went on to a 7-4 win over the Mets for their tenth win in 12 games.

Among the games these evening there are two pitchers who are looking for their seventh win of the season. Hiroki Kuroda (hih-ROH'-kee kuh-ROH'-duh) of the Yankees is 6-2 and facing the Orioles in Baltimore, while Boston's Clay Buchholz is 6-0 and looking for No. 7 against the White Sox in Chicago.

MLB-BREWERS

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Right-hander Kyle Lohse (lohsh) will miss his next scheduled turn in the Milwaukee Brewers' rotation because of irritation in his pitching elbow. Lohse signed a $33 million, three-year contract with Milwaukee a week before opening day and is 1-5 with a 3.76 ERA.

MLB-TWINS

ATLANTA (AP) -- Third baseman Trevor Plouffe (ploof) has been placed on the seven-day disabled list by the Twins with a concussion. He was struck in the head by Dan Uggla's shin while breaking up an attempted double play Tuesday in a game with Atlanta. He remained down for a few minutes before walking slowly to the dugout, holding his head. During an examination for concussion-related symptoms, Plouffe showed sensitivity to light.

NFL-URLACHER

CHICAGO (AP) -- Former Associated Press defensive player of the year Brian Urlacher (UR'-lah-kur) says he's retiring after spending 13 seasons with the Chicago Bears. The eight-time Pro Bowler announced his retirement through social media accounts.

Urlacher was the face of the Bears' franchise and leaves as one of the game's great linebackers. In March, he and the Bears were unable to reach a contract agreement and he became a free agent.

Urlacher started 180 games from 2000 through 2012, and recorded a team-record 1,779 tackles. He has 41 1/2 sacks, 22 interceptions, 16 fumble recoveries and 11 forced fumbles. He was the AP's defensive player of the year in 2005 and helped lead the 2006 team to the Super Bowl.

Last year, he was slowed by injuries.

NFL-49ERS-CRABTREE

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- San Francisco 49ers leading wide receiver Michael Crabtree has had surgery to repair a torn right Achilles tendon. Crabtree had the surgery a day after suffering the injury during an organized team activity.

Coach Jim Harbaugh would not speculate when Crabtree might return to play, but indicated that the surgery was not expected to be season ending.

The 25-year-old Crabtree had career highs last season with 85 receptions for 1,105 yards and nine touchdowns for the NFC champion Niners.

NFL-JETS-GOODSON

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) -- New York Jets running back Mike Goodson has pleaded not guilty to drug and weapons charges in New Jersey. He was arrested early last Friday along with a friend after they were found in a car stopped on Interstate 80. The men were charged with marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and weapons offenses stemming from a 45-caliber semi-automatic handgun that included a hollow-point bullet found in the vehicle.

NBA PLAYOFFS

MIAMI (AP) -- The Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers open up the NBA's Eastern Conference final tonight with Game 1 in Miami. This is a series featuring two contrasting teams. The Heat, the defending league champions, are a battle-tested squad very familiar with the pressure of late-season playoffs. For the Pacers, these are pretty much untested waters as only one member of the team has ever been in a conference final. Backup big man Ian Mahinmi got all of 71 seconds in one game of the 2011 West title series with Dallas.

A year ago in the playoffs Indiana took Miami to six games in the Eastern semifinals, leading the series 2-1 at one point.

The clubs met three times during the regular season with Indiana taking two of the contests. Those two wins came in Indianapolis while the Heat won in Miami.

Game 2 will take place in Miami Friday night.

NHL-CANUCKS-VIGNEAULT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- The Vancouver Canucks have fired coach Alain Vigneault (al-AYN' VEEN'-yoh) after the team was eliminated from the first round of the playoffs for the second straight season.

Vigneault is the the Canucks' all-time leader in coaching wins with a 313-170-57 record over seven seasons. He led the club to six Northwest Division titles, two Presidents' Trophy titles and an appearance in the 2011 Stanley Cup final.

NHL PLAYOFFS

OTTAWA (AP) -- The Penguins can take a commanding 3-1 lead over Ottawa in their best-of-seven Stanley Cup Eastern Conference semifinal tonight. That said, it won't be easy as once again the Senators have home ice advantage. Playing in Pittsburgh the Pens won 4-1 and 4-3 but lost the third game, played in Ottawa, 2-1 in double overtime.

Sens captain Daniel Alfredsson tied the game at 1-1 with 29 seconds left in regulation and Colin Greening scored the game winner.

Game 5 will be played back in the Steel City Friday night.

OLYMPICS

UNDATED (AP) -- It looks like Mike Krzyzewski (shuh-SHEF'-skee) wants more gold.

A person with knowledge of the decision says the Duke coach has agreed to return as U.S. men's Olympic basketball coach for the 2016 Olympics.

Krzyzewski was originally expected to step down but instead will attempt to lead the Americans to a third straight gold medal, the person tells The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made.

The Hall of Fame coach has led the Americans since 2005, winning gold at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, and the 2010 world basketball championship.

FRENCH OPEN

PARIS (AP) -- American Brian Baker and Mardy Fish have pulled out of the upcoming French Open. Organizers say that Baker has not recovered from a right knee operation and Fish is unfit because of heart problems. Seventh-ranked Juan Martin del Potro (wahn mar-TEEN' dehl POHT'-roh) of Argentina has pulled out as well because of a respiratory virus.

U.S. Open champion Andy Murray pulled out Tuesday because of a chronic back injury.
